The Egyptian Heritage Rescue Foundation

The Egyptian Heritage Rescue Foundation (EHRF) was founded in 2013, with the objective of promoting and safeguarding Egyptian and regional cultural heritage. Its first mission was to deliver and design, for government staff and concerned organizations, courses on Disaster Risk Preparedness and First Aid to Cultural Heritage (FACH) on cooperation with ICCROM.

The mission of the EHRF is to address problems related to endangered heritage in museums, libraries, archives and historic sites, as well as in urban and rural surroundings. It is therefore seeks to engage in a wide range of actions, from academia to practical interventions. This included documenting and digitizing museum collections, training curators and conservators in risk assessment and mitigation, and upgrading and reusing historic buildings.

  1. Work towards improving, upgrading and implementing the laws protecting heritage to conform to the international conventions ratified by Egypt.
  2. Establish priority plans and promote the re-use of buildings to ensure their sustainability.
  3. Rally all concerned citizens and institutions to set up a strong lobby to monitor the performance of decision-makers as a key factor in the protection of national museums and historic sites.
  4. Organize a team of three persons (conservator, archeologist and architect), to monitor, in each museum and historic site, any development concerning heritage and to coordinate with the various authorities.
  5. Digitize all museum collections in order to prevent thefts, provide accountability and insure the survival of Egyptian heritage.

Long Term Objectives

  1. Improve the management and fundraising capacities of museum administration, to insure that they can play an effective role in familiarizing the Egyptian public with their heritage, as well as in promoting education and academic achievements.
  2. Provide professional advice and services to private collectors and owners of historic buildings.
  3. Encourage investment in heritage, eventually implanting a project to demonstrate the economic benefits of well-protected, well maintained heritage.
